The limited permit option to obtain a New York license in the area of clinical laboratory is no longer available. The last day to apply for a limited permit was August 31, 2018.

If you are interested in becoming a clinical laboratory technologist in New York, you will need to complete the following requirements:

  • Earn a bachelor’s degree in medical technology or a related life sciences field, such as biology or chemistry.
  • Pass the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) exam.
  • Apply for licensure with the New York State Education Department (NYSED).

The NYSED also offers a provisional permit option for applicants who are not yet qualified to take the CLT exam. To be eligible for a provisional permit, you must:

  • Be enrolled in a program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
  • Have completed at least 60 semester hours of coursework in medical laboratory science.
  • Be employed in a clinical laboratory under the supervision of a licensed clinical laboratory technologist.

The provisional permit allows you to practice under the supervision of a licensed clinical laboratory technologist while you complete the education and experience requirements for licensure.
