What are the basic tasks of a dental assistant?

1. Prepare patients for dental treatment by making them feel comfortable and providing them with the necessary materials.

2. Assist the dentist during procedures by handing him/her instruments and materials, or suctioning saliva.

3. Maintain patient records, including medical and dental histories, charting, and x–rays.

4. Sterilize and organize dental instruments, supplies, and materials.

5. Take impressions of patients’ teeth for study casts, crowns, and bridges.

6. Take and develop dental x–rays.

7. Educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques.

8. Prepare and administer treatments, such as fluoride and sealants.

9. Perform office and administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments and handling billing and insurance paperwork.
