What are the requirements to obtain a marriage therapy license in New York?
In order to obtain a marriage and family therapy license in New York, an individual must meet the following requirements:
1. Possess a master‘s degree or higher in marriage and family therapy from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE).
2. Pass the New York State Marriage and Family Therapy Licensing Examination (NYSMFTLEX).
3. Submit an application to the New York State Education Department (NYSED) for a marriage and family therapy license.
4. Have two years of supervised clinical experience in marriage and family therapy, with at least one year of experience in New York. 5. Fulfill continuing education requirements. 6. Pay the required fees.

What are the requirements to obtain a clinical counselor license in New York?
In order to become a Licensed Clinical Counselor (L.C.C.) in New York State, applicants must meet the following requirements:
1. Hold a master’s degree in mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, or art therapy from an accredited program;
2. Complete a minimum of 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience, including at least 100 hours of face–to–face supervision;
3. Pass the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE);
4. Apply for and obtain a license from the New York State Education Department.
Applicants must also complete continuing education requirements every two years in order to maintain their license.
