If you have a degree in physical therapy outside the country of the United States, what are the requirements? The requirements for foreign–educated physical therapists to practice in the United States vary by state. Generally, applicants must have a professional degree from a physical therapy program that is deemed equivalent to an accredited physical therapy program in the United States. In addition, all applicants must pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE), which is administered by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy. Applicants must also demonstrate English language proficiency and complete a clinical internship in the United States. Finally, applicants may be required to obtain a visa or other immigration documents.
